Daley shortlisted for prestigious BBC award

01 Dec 2009 15:13

World Champion Tom Daley is one step closer to clinching the BBC Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY) award after being named on the shortlist for the national prize.

The BBC have named their top 10 athletes for the SPOTY award and Daley is one of the first athletes to have ever been named on the shortlist for both the SPOTY and the BBC Young SPOTY awards.

Daley made a name for himself with the British public last year when he became Britain’s second youngest Olympian and this year took on and this year he went on to beat Olympic Champion Matt Mitcham at the World Championships in Rome.

British Swimming are encouraging everyone to get behind Daley to help him claim the title ahead of other top British athletes including Jessica Ennis and Jenson Button, and become the first aquatic athlete to win the award for 45 years.
