Tom Daley has made the decision to pull out of the British Gas National Cup 2012 in order to rest an injured thumb ahead of the FINA Visa World Cup next month.

Daley missed an entry to one of his dives in training which led to part of his thumb becoming bruised and after taking medical advice he will rest his injury in order to continue his preparations for the international competition in February.

The Plymouth-based diver will be back into training next week as his preparations continue for the London Games.

National Performance Director Alexei Evangulov commented: “The decision to withdraw Tom from the competition was made after discussions with our medical team.

“Hands are a vital part of diving as they break the water to give you the ripped entry that you need so it is better for Tom to rest and recover properly for the FINA Visa World Cup.

“The FINA Visa World Cup is the benchmark meet of this part of the year because we can have an early indication of where we are compared to the rest of the world and Tom is still in our plans for this competition.”

Daley added: “I missed an entry on my Inward 3 ½ Somersaults and it meant that the bone in my thumb became bruised. I’m going back into normal training next week when we think that the bone will have recovered. The build up to the FINA Visa World Cup will continue and I can’t wait to compete in front of the home crowd.”
