Divers announced for European challenge

11 August 2014

The British Gas GBR Diving team has been announced for the European Championships in Berlin.

Fresh from a successful Commonwealth Games campaign, champions Tom Daley, Jack Laugher, Chris Mears, Alicia Blagg and Rebecca Gallantree will line up for the Brits in their challenge for European titles.

The seven-day event, which takes place from 18 – 24 August, will see some of the world’s best take to boards for honours.

Laugher will return to the springboard events after winning bronze at the World Cup followed by two golds and a silver at the Commonwealth Games.

“I am excited to be getting back into action,” Laugher said. “This season has taught me so much and I have achieved more that I could have hoped for.

“To win bronze at the World Cup gave me huge amounts of confidence for the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. The crowd really pushed me on in Scotland. Every time I stood up there the roar was amazing and I am so happy with what I achieved.

“The Europeans will provide a tough challenge on the 3m from the likes of Ilia Zakharov [Russia], Illya Kvasha [Ukraine] and Patrick Hausding who will have home crowd support.

“I haven’t won a European-level medal before so it would be great to round off my season with another podium position.”
