Divers announced for European Championships

12th June 2012

Olympic finalists Tonia Couch and Sarah Barrow will lead a nine-strong British contingent to the 2013 European Diving Championships in Rostock, Germany.

Couch and Barrow are reigning European Champions in the women’s 10m Synchro and after strong performances through the FINA Diving World Series this spring they will be hopeful of more glory in Germany.

“Our synchro partnership has really developed over the past two years and the performances through the World Series have helped to prepare us for this competition." - Sarah BarrowThe competition, which takes place from the 18th – 23rd June, will be the final challenge for many of Europe’s best divers ahead of this summer’s World Championships in Barcelona.

The British Gas GBR Diving team also consists of four athletes that will be competing at their first senior European level meet. James Denny, Daniel Goodfellow, Oliver Dingley and Josh Dowd will be looking to learn from Europe’s best and gain experience of senior competitions.

Olympians Rebecca Gallantree, Hannah Starling and Alicia Blagg will be back in action in the Springboard events as they look to continue their progress through 2013.

Of the competition Barrow said: “We are really looking forward to competing at the European Championships again and we are excited for the chance to regain our title from last year.

“This is also the first time I will be competing individually on 10m at a European level since 2010 so I am looking to improve on the result I got there.”

Couch added: “We’ve been training really hard in the preparation for Europeans. The training has been going well and we have had some good synchro sessions ahead of the competition so we are feeling pretty confident.

“We performed well at the World Series and got good results which was great but there weren’t any European divers in the events we competed at so Rostock will be a good test of where we are ahead of Worlds. We will need to just think about what we’ve got to do and not what the other athletes are doing then we should be fine.”
