Divers named for World Championships

25th June 2013

The British Gas GBR Diving Team has been announced for the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona and it sees nine Olympians returning to a major international competition.

Olympic bronze medallist Tom Daley will compete on the 10m Platform Individual alongside 16-year old World Championship debutant Daniel Goodfellow.

"I love the World Championships and I’m excited to be a part of the team to compete at the iconic pool in Barcelona." - Tom Daley Daley’s preparation to the competition has been hampered by an upper arm injury but with rehab plans in place he looks set to return to the prestigious diving event at which he won gold in 2009.

European silver medallists Tonia Couch and Sarah Barrow will compete in both the Individual and Synchronised 10m Platform events and will be looking to continue their good form into competition in Barcelona.

Jack Laugher, Nick Robinson-Baker and Chris Mears make up the men’s contingent on the Springboard with Laugher taking part in both the 1m and 3m Springboard and Robinson-Baker and Mears featuring as the 3m Synchro partnership.

City of Leeds’ Alicia Blagg, Hannah Starling and Rebecca Gallantree will return to the Springboard events after a busy start to the 2013 season.

National Performance Director Alexei Evangulov said: “This is a strong set of athletes with a lot of experience under their belts. All of the athletes apart from Daniel have experience of both a World Championships and an Olympics and I think they should use this to their advantage in Barcelona.

“Tom’s preparations haven’t been ideal with his rehab from his arm injury but the British Swimming medical staff, alongside Andy [Banks – Daley’s coach], have worked hard to give him the best lead into the competition possible.

“We have had some good performances in the early stages of the season getting medals in the World Series and the European Championships and I think they should all be able to continue this into the World Championships.”

Daley said: “I haven’t had the best build up to this competition. My triceps injury has meant that I haven’t been able to compete since the World Series in Edinburgh in April, but Andy and I have worked closely with the physios and support staff to make sure the right rehabilitation process was followed.

"I really enjoy the level of competition at a World Championships and it’ll be great to get back on the boards again, but the sport of diving is very much down to how you perform on the day. Anything can happen when you step on to those boards. It’s been a tough couple of months, but I’ll keep working hard towards being as good as I possibly can be on the day.”
