Thornton wins European Junior bronze in Italy

Sam Thornton collected the British Gas GBR Diving Team’s second medal of the 2014 European Junior Diving Championships with 1m Springboard bronze on the second day in Bergamo.

Competing in the Group A category, Thornton, who completed a clean sweep of the titles at the Elite Junior Championships earlier this season, maintained his concentration to qualify first from a 26-diver preliminary in the morning.

And the City of Leeds diver held on to a medal-winning position in the final, scoring 504.80 for bronze behind Germany's Timo Barthel (516.50) and Poland's Kacper Lesiak (506.00).

Jordan Houlden (City of Sheffield) finished 21st in the prelim on 369.85 with just the top 12 progressing.

Gemma McArthur (Southampton Diving Academy) and Shanice Lobb (Plymouth Diving) both made the final of the Group A Platform, finishing seventh and eighth respectively.

McArthur qualified from the prelims in fourth before finishing on 359.80 after the final while Lobb, who progressed fifth from the prelim, scored 357.00 to place one behind her British teammate.
