British Swimming celebrates LEN European Aquatics Day

2nd July 2013

The European federation for aquatics, LEN, celebrated its five disciplines, Swimming, Open Water, Water Polo, Synchronised Swimming and Diving throughout June and early July at the LEN Aquatics Day events.

Throughout June, 51 European countries hosted their own special event and on the final day of the British Gas Swimming Championships in Sheffield, four Olympians led aquatic master class sessions for members of the public to learn more about their sports.

Olympic bronze medallist Joanne Jackson took the lead in giving her group top swimming tips. Olympic Water Polo player Alex Parsonage ran a session alongside, Katie Dawkins (Synchronised Swimming) and diver Monique Gladding who shared their experiences and expertise of their sports.

The families who took part had also received tickets to watch the heats and finals session of the British Gas Swimming Championships to watch the best swimmers in Great Britain challenge for place on the World Championships team. After their master class they also had an opportunity to question the Olympians on what it takes to be an Olympic athlete and for  any further top tips.

Parsonage said: “It was great to take in the LEN Aquatics Day and celebrate all of our sports, alongside my Team GB teammates.

“I’m sure the master class participants enjoyed the opportunity to get in the water and have a go. For me it was great to share my love of water polo with other people.

“Hopefully they will be inspired to play more often.”
