Water Polo team prepares for European Champs qualifiers

The British Gas GBR Women’s Water Polo team is preparing to take part in the LEN European Championship qualifying tournament this week.

"Training in France before heading to Gouda has given us a good opportunity to work further with our coaches and prepare as a team," - Rosie MorrisThe event, which takes place in Gouda in the Netherlands between 16–19 January, will see five teams in Group A battle for two places in the European Championships later this year.

Currently ranked 7th following their finishing position at the 2012 European Championships, the British Gas GBR Women’s Water Polo team will face Ukraine, Israel, Portugal and hosts Netherlands during the four day event.

The top two teams will join the winners of Group B and pre-qualifiers Italy, Russia, Greece and Hungary in Budapest for the finals in July.

Captain Rosie Morris, who is currently training with the squad in Lille, said: “The team is really looking forwards to starting the qualification games.

“We were all disappointed by our close defeat to Russia last month in the World League, but being able to train together in France before heading to Gouda has given us a good opportunity to work further with our coaches and prepare as a team.”

  • Thursday 16 January, 17:00 GMT – Ukraine v GBR
  • Saturday 18 January, 08:00 GMT – Israel v GBR
  • Saturday 18 January, 17:00 GMT - Netherlands v GBR
  • Sunday 19 January, 08:00 GMT - GBR v Portugal
