London 2012 begin search for inspirational Olympic torchbearers
20 May 2011
What better way of being part of the London 2012 experience than carrying the Olympic torch itself on its 70-day journey across the United Kingdom?
The 8,000-mile Olympic Torch Relay will reach all corners of the UK, starting in Land’s End on 19th May 2012 before arriving in the Olympic Stadium on the 27th July 2012 – just in time for the lighting of the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony.
The Olympic Flame will showcase the very best of who we are and where we live.
And London 2012 organisers have begun the search for the 8,000 inspirational torchbearers who will help carry the flame during its epic journey.
Perhaps you know someone at your club or pool or away from swimming who inspires you or the people around you.
There’s no right or wrong type of person – the torchbearers will be ordinary people who have done extraordinary things in the UK.

Nominations close on 29th June 2011 so if you want to give someone the chance to shine, nominate them now!
London 2012 chairman Lord Coe – who participated in the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay – said: “The Olympic Flame will shine a light right across every Nation and Region of the UK and showcase the very best of who we are and where we live.
“The first locations on the route confirmed today give a flavour of the reach the Olympic Torch Relay will have around the UK and how extensive the opportunity for starting to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic Games will be”
