British open water swimmers heading to Cyprus

3 October 2013

A quartet of British open water swimmers will travel to Cyprus for the International Swimming Marathon at the end of this month.

Tom Allen, Tom Sunter, Danielle Huskisson and Rachel Williams will compete at the open sea event in Limassol with 5km and 10km races over the weekend of 26 - 27 October.

"This competition is part of our strategy to compete more often, in different environments and different conditions," - Mark PerryHuskisson finished 33rd in the 10km race on her FINA World Championship debut in Barcelona earlier this month before placing sixth in the Turkish leg of the 5km LEN Open Water Cup six days later.

Allen and Sunter are no strangers to international open water competition either, both having competed in three legs of the 2013 FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup at the start of the year.

Williams completes the squad, having underlined her recent improvement in distance events in the pool with 800m Freestyle gold and a Welsh record for 400m Individual Medley silver at the ASA National Championships in August.

Team Manager Mark Perry said: “This competition is part of our strategy to compete more often, in different environments and different conditions.

“It will allow our athletes for Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 to build up an arsenal of different tactical race scenarios to draw upon.”
