Hynd and Smith recognised at Notts Awards

18th February 2013

Paralympic champion Ollie Hynd and his Nova Centurion coach Glenn Smith both triumphed at the annual Nottinghamshire Sports Awards.

Having won gold, silver and bronze on his Paralympic debut at London 2012 last year, Hynd won the Achievement of the Year Award while Smith was named Performance Coach of the Year for the third time.

And while he has achieved international acclaim for his performances in London, Hynd insisted he will always be fiercely proud of his roots.

"It's always a thrill to win a medal on an international level representing my country but it's also incredibly humbling to be honoured by my local peers," said Hynd.

"Whenever I get into the swimming pool I'm not just swimming for Britain, I’m competing for Mansfield and Nottinghamshire as well."

Hynd wasn't Smith's only swimmer to achieve Paralympic glory last summer; Charlotte Henshaw won SB6 100m Breaststroke silver at the 2012 Paralympics.

Smith commented: "I’m very honoured to have received this award, especially as I was amongst some other outstanding coaches who were also nominated for this recognition.

"It’s also a real privilege to have won the award for a third time!”
