Massey and Young achieve European qualification standard

11 March 2011

World medallist Natalie Massey (SB14) won the women’s 100m Breaststroke on the final day of competition for the multi-classification events at the British Gas Swimming Championships.

Massey swam a strong race and touched in a time of 1:25.47 which gave her 868 points. The time was within the qualification standard for the European Championships.

“I’m shocked,” said Massey, who won the MC 200m Freestyle earlier in the week.

“I’m not rested for this but that time has put me third or fourth in the world so that is brilliant.”

Paralympic Champion Liz Johnson (SB6) took silver in 1:40.40 with 861 points. Claire Cashmore (SB8) won the bronze with 1:21.73 and a total of 856 points.

World Champion Thomas Young (SB7) swam well to hold off the field in the men’s 100m Breaststroke and secured a time within the qualification mark for Berlin.

Young clocked a time of 1:27.79 and 809 points.

World Champion Daniel Pepper (SB14) won the silver in 1:11.53 with 801 points and Gareth Duke (SB14) was awarded bronze in a time of 1:33.34 and 758 points.
