Anita Lonsbrough celebrates her golden 50th anniversary
Last week marked 50 years since Anita Lonsbrough won her 200m Breaststroke gold medal at the Rome Olympics.
For 48 years Lonsbrough was the only British female Olympian that stood on top of the prestigious podium until Rebecca Adlington took two titles at the Beijing Olympics. The two now stand as Britain’s golden girls of swimming.
At the Rome Olympics Lonsbrough was one of only two Olympic gold medallist for Team GB and she went on to carry the flag for Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964.
In 1963 she became the first amateur sportswoman to be given an MBE and retired from the sport in 1964 but remains one of the biggest names in British Swimming.
