ASHER TAKES GOLD AGAIN AT EUROPEAN MASTERS CHAMPS

It was second day, second gold for Jane Asher as the Kings Cormorant swimmer continued to make her mark at the European Masters Championship in Cadiz, Spain.
Her 3:04.70 in the Women’s 200m Freestyle 75-79yrs age group was more than 50 seconds ahead of second place Christa Gornemann (GER) and more than 63 seconds ahead of her GB team mate Annie Scott.
Calum McKinlay (Camden Swiss) also added to his medal tally at the Champs, this time taking gold in the Men’s 200m Freestyle. McKinlay, competing in the 45-49yrs age group, led from the start and finished in 2:02.37.
There were more successes for the Spencer Swim Team, this time in the women’s 50m Breaststroke as Muriel Hitchcock took gold in the 70-74yrs age group and Diane Ford in the 65-69yrs. The duo also teamed up as part of the gold winning 4x50m Freestyle team in the 280-319yrs category.
Team mates Tony Cherrington took the silver medal in the Men’s 200m Free 65-69yrs category with 2:28.81, and Jean Howard-Jones took the 65-69yrs title in the corresponding women’s race.
Amanda Heath (Spencer Swim Team) took bronze in the Women’s 50m Breaststroke 50-54yrs and Women’s 100m Butterfly 50-54yrs. She was also part of the Spencer Swim Team that took bronze in Women’s 4x50m Freestyle 160-199yrs category.
In the Men’s 200m Freestyle, John Tennant (Birmingham Master) and Geoff Stokes (Spencer Swim Team) took silver and bronze medals respectively in the 70-74yrs category.
It was a one/two in the Women’s 3m Springboard for Havering Cormorants’ Gemma Pearson and Elizabeth Simpson in the 25-29yrs category. Simpson led going into the sixth and final dive but Pearson scored 53.90 with the judges to edge ahead with a 264.75 final score.
James McNally (Highgate and Beaumont) went one better than his performance yesterday as he clinched gold in the Men’s 1m Springboard 55-59yrs.
Katherine Bell (Amershan SC) scored an impressive 249.20 in the Women’s 3m Springboard 40-44yrs to take gold, while her club mate Jennifer Cluskey recorded another third place finish, in the 55-59yrs category.
Rene Puddifoot (St Albans Diving Club) continued to fly the flag for 80+yrs divers as she took the gold medal in the Women’s 3m Springboard. Challenged only by her own best score, she recorded 114.20.
