British swimmers target internationals on road to 2012

7th October 2011

Britain’s swimmers are preparing for action on the international circuit as they supplement their intense early season training with race preparation ahead of the Olympic year.

With eyes firmly focused on the British Gas Swimming Championships 2012 (Selection Trials) at the London Aquatics Centre in March, athletes have been working hard towards meeting the criteria for nomination to Team GB for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

These events are an important part of the process for our national squad members as they prepare for 2012.

British Swimming National Performance Director Michael Scott said: “It’s critical that we provide our swimmers and coaches with access to a range of long course (50m) and short course (25m) competition opportunities over the coming months as they prepare for the British Gas Swimming Championships 2012.

“All these events are an important part of the process for our national squad members as they prepare for the opportunities and challenges that 2012 will present.”

Britain’s swimmers have currently targeted eight international events they will be competing in as part of the most intense phases of their year-long preparation.

The most challenging event on the five-month schedule will be the LEN European Championships (25m short course) in December which will feature a British Gas GBR Swimming Team of 29 athletes who will face the rest of Europe in Szczecin, Poland (8-11 December).

World Championship silver medallist Hannah Miley (Garioch SC) will be joined by the likes of Michael Jamieson and Andrew Willis (British Gas ITC Bath) and Jemma Lowe (British Gas ITC Swansea) as they lead the British hopes.

Britain’s athletes will also feature within the FINA World Cup (25m short course) tour with a team of nine competing at the Stockholm, Sweden (15-16 October) leg of the series and 44 athletes representing the British Gas GBR Swimming Team at the Berlin, Germany leg (22-23 October).

December will be a busy month for athletes with groups heading to the Dutch Open Swimming Championships in Eindhoven (2-4 December), the U.S. Open in Atlanta (1-3 December) and a small team will join Europe for the Duel in the Pool against the U.S. which will also take place in Atlanta (16-17 December).

The 2012 year will start in Australia and Belgium for some of Britain’s athletes with swimmers from the British Gas ITCs of Bath and Loughborough competing at the Victorian State Championships in Melbourne (13-15 January) and a mixed Development and “B” Team attending the Flanders Swimming Cup in Antwerp (14-15 January).
