British swimmers ready for Barcelona World Champs

26 July 2013

The British Gas GBR Swimming Team have landed in Barcelona for their first major test since London 2012 at the 2013 FINA World Championships, which start on Sunday.

Olympic 200m Breaststroke silver medallist Michael Jamieson (British Gas ITC Bath) and World Short Course 400m Individual Medley champion Hannah Miley (Garioch) will lead the medal challenge for the 27-strong British contingent, which features six athletes making their senior long course Championship debut.

"It’s the start of a four-year cycle and we’re very interested to see how they respond," - Head coach Bill FurnissThe competition will also be a first for the new British senior management team of National Performance Director Chris Spice and Head Coach Bill Furniss.

And Furniss, who coached Rebecca Adlington to four medals at the past two Olympic Games, admits he’s excited to see how the new-look team shape up against the world’s elite.

“We’re going in to next week with a different team to the Olympics,” said Furniss.

“It’s a smaller team with new swimmers on there. It’s the start of a four-year cycle and we’re very interested to see how they respond and what we need to work on with the team in the next three years.

“The trials were interesting – there were some new kids on the block and we have a number of rookies on this team. There are some good swimmers in Britain coming through so this is a starting point for us.

“We’re focused very much on next week but the long-term focus is Rio and we’ve got to remember that. We need to try to build up each year and this is a stepping stone for that.”

British Swimming has a strong history at recent World Championships, having won seven medals in the pool at the 2009 staging in Rome and five at the 2011 event in Shanghai.

But Furniss insists the team won’t be distracted by the pursuit of medal targets in Spain.

“The target [from UK Sport] is three medals in Olympic events and this might sound really bad but we’re not focusing on that – we’re focusing on performance,” said Furniss.

“If we get the performance right, the medals will follow. You have to make it happen by focusing on the process.

“We’re trying to get the team to look at performing as well as they possibly can and doing everything they need to do to give themselves the best chance.

“Generally there’s a dip in the post-Olympic year but I don’t think this one is not going to be like that.

“I think this could be one of the fastest World Championships, not necessarily in terms of world records but in terms of the high standard. It will be very competitive in just about every event.”
