Brits line up for USA V Europe Duel in the Pool
14th December 2011
The combined forces of the British Gas GBR Swimming Team and the likes of the Netherlands, Denmark, Hungary and Germany will come together under the banner of the European All Star Team and go head-to-head with the might of the U.S. at the 2011 Duel in the Pool (25m) in Atlanta, Georgia this week.
We have a very strong European team this year and we intend to give the Yanks a run for their money.
The European All Stars will feature Britain’s Fran Halsall, Lizzie Simmonds, Gemma Spofforth, Robbie Renwick, Adam Brown and Marco Loughran as well as Europe’s finest such as Lotte Friis (Denmark) and Marleen Veldhuis (Netherlands) for the women, and Laszlo Cseh (Hungary) and Pawel Korzeniowski (Poland) for the men as they take on the world’s number one swimming nation on 16th and 17th December.
And the test faced by the European All Stars will be a stern one given the strength and depth of their USA rivals. For the women Missy Franklin, Katie Hoff, Kate Ziegler will be joined by Natalie Coughlin and Rebecca Soni while Ryan Lochte, Brendan Hansen and Peter Vanderkaay feature in the men’s events
The European All Stars team will be led by British Swimming Head Coach Dennis Pursley who believes it will be a “thrilling event” at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Centre.
“This is going to be an exciting encounter for everyone involved whether you’re a swimmer, a coach or one of the thousands of spectators,” said Pursley. “We’ve got a great opportunity to see many of the sport’s biggest and best going head-to-head.
“The event provides another outstanding opportunity for the athletes of all countries to hone their race skills in preparation for their respective Olympic trials and the Games themselves.
“I expect the swimmers from both teams to be in various stages of preparation - some rested and shaved down, striving for best times, while others may be in the midst of a heavy training cycle but I expect to see some exciting racing.
“We have a very strong European team this year and we intend to give the Yanks a run for their money. It could come down to the relays where they have an edge on paper, but you never know until the race is swum.”
