The penultimate day of the LEN European Junior Swimming Championships saw the British team, powered by British Gas, pick up a further two medals in Helsinki.

Rachael Kelly took her second individual medal of the Championships as she raced to gold in the Girls’ 100m Butterfly.

After taking a silver earlier in the week over 100m, Kelly touched in 1:00.47 to go one better and come away with the title.

"I was seeded first before the meet even though I was placed third after the semis so I'm happy with the gold,” said Kelly. “I've still got the 50m and the medley relay so I'm hoping for even more!"

Siobhan-Marie O’Connor also swam, finishing eighth in a time of 1:02.86.

The Girls’ 4x200m Freestyle Relay quartet of Emma Saunders, Fiona Donnelly, Rachael Williamson and Sophie Smith took silver behind Germany in a time of 8:10.21.

Relay Coach Russ Barber was pleased with the whole team: “There were some astonishing individual performances from all four and that means a great team effort.”

Thomas Sunter claimed fourth position in the Boys’ 800m Freestyle with a time of 8:07.51 while Alfie Howes’ time of 8:16.68 was enough to secure him ninth place overall.

Sara Hamilton took fifth in the Girls’ 50m Freestyle touching in 26.21.

David Gregory finished eighth in the Boys’ 200m Backstroke touching in 2:03.96 closely followed by teammate Calum Jarvis in ninth with a time of 2:04.01.

Tomorrow will see a number of Brits competing in finals after qualifying through today.

Karley Mann was the fastest qualifier in the Girls’ 100m Backstroke after touching in 1:02.49. She will be joined by Phoebe Lednderyou whose 1:03.51 was enough to see her go through in fifth position.

Braxston Timm made it through to tomorrow’s final of the Boys’ 100m Butterfly in 54.37 and Ieuan Lloyd will go in the Boys’ 200m Freestyle after recording 1:51.43 for fourth.

Sara laugher qualified second in the Girls’ 100m Breaststroke and Sophie Smith heads into tomorrow’s Girls’ 200m Individual Medley final after qualifying in first position with a time of 2:16.05. Siobhan-Marie O’Connor also made the final touching in 2:19.27.
