Cooke named Head of Sports Science and Sports Medicine

British Swimming has appointed Karl Cooke as Head of Sports Science and Sports Medicine to strategically support the World Class Swimming programme.

Cooke will lead the development of swimming’s four-year cycle strategy across Sports Science and Sports Medicine (SSSM) by working within the programme to identify and develop research and innovations that will improve the medal potential at the Rio 2016 Olympics and beyond.

"I am both excited and honoured to be asked to take on this important position with British Swimming," - Head of Sports Science and Sports Medicine Karl CookeThe current Sport Science Manager for the Lawn Tennis Association/British Tennis, Cooke will oversee the strategic direction of SSSM within British Swimming while leading a team of sport scientists and support services such as physiology, strength and conditioning, psychology and performance lifestyle.

Commenting on his appointment, Cooke said: “I am both excited and honoured to be asked to take on this important position with British Swimming. Sports Science and Medicine will play a key supporting role in helping British swimmers and their coaches to realise their potential in Rio.

“I leave British Tennis in arguably its strongest ever period in terms of elite performance and I am looking forward to working with Chris Spice, Bill Furniss and the rest of World Class Performance team to achieving our targets in 2016 and beyond.”

Cooke, who has spent the past six years with the LTA and previously worked with the Singapore Sports Council, will begin his new role in October.

Commenting on the announcement British Swimming National Performance Director Chris Spice said: “We’re delighted to welcome Karl to the British Swimming Team as the new Head of Sports Science and Sports Medicine.

“Karl brings an impressive background in high performance sport as well as an exhaustive knowledge of sports science and medicine. He will use these attributes to help us determine and achieve those fine margins which, when coupled with the dedication of preparation, deliver success on the world stage.”
