Swimmer David Davies named Delhi 2010 Welsh flag bearer

Welsh double Olympic medallist David Davies has been given the honour of carrying the Welsh flag at the Opening Ceremony of the Delhi Commonwealth Games.

Davies, who is competing at his third Commonwealth Games, was announced as the flag bearer for the Opening Ceremony and just days before taking to the pool in Delhi.

The long distance specialist will be competing in the 400m and 1500m Freestyle events and will be looking to show he is still a force to be reckoned with in the pool.

On being named the Welsh flag bearer Davies said: “It is the biggest honour I think I have had in my career. I am a proud Welshman and it is something that I have really wanted to do. I want to enjoy these Games and I am planning to lead the team in with a smile and hopefully lead them to success.

“It is really special to compete for Wales; you only get to do it every four years. Wales is a proud and patriotic nation that celebrates its sporting success and to lead the country into competition is a nationalistic honour that I will always remember.”
