O’Connor, Allen and Lowe secure European medals

Teenager Siobhan-Marie O’Connor earned Britain’s first medal of the LEN European Short Course Championships in Denmark with the British Gas GBR Swimming Team securing three medals on day one.
Britain took silver and bronze in the Women’s 200m Individual Medley with O’Connor and Sophie Allen finishing strongly from a line of four swimmers chasing down gold medallist Katinka Hosszu (Hungary).
Hosszu set a Championship Record to take gold in 2:04.33 ahead of O’Connor in 2:06.73, her second personal best time of the day, and Allen just outside her team mate in 2:06.86.
Jemma Lowe took Britain’s third medal in Herning when the British record holder exhibited controlled pacing to win 200m Butterfly bronze in a fast final which saw gold go in a new European Record.
Spain’s Mireia Belmonte Garcia set the standard to take gold in 2:01.52 while Germany’s Fran Hentke took the silver in 2:03.47 with Lowe touching in 2:04.51. Aimee Willmott also lined up in the final for Great Britain and bettered her personal best time twice through the rounds to finish in sixth place with 2:07.33.
Michael Jamieson set a new British Record in the semi-finals of the Men’s 100m Breaststroke to comfortably book his place in tomorrow’s final as fifth fastest qualifier. He touched home in 57.89 to finish fourth in his semi-final and better the previous national mark of 57.91 set by James Gibson in 2008.

He was just outside that time in the semi-finals finishing sixth in his semi and 12th overall in 58.52.
World Championships medallist Fran Halsall booked a place in tomorrow’s final of the Women’s 100m Freestyle with a comfortable swim in the semi-finals. She led from the gun, touched first to 50m and backed it up to finish first in 52.32 and qualify fastest for the final.
O'Connor, Willmott and Halsall returned for the 4x50m Freestyle final to close the session, teaming up with Hannah Miley to finish ninth in 1:40.26.
