Roebuck and Simmonds lead British Gas team to golden start

Joe Roebuck and Lizzie Simmonds lead the way with gold as the British Gas Swimming Teams won three medals on day one of the FINA World Cup in Stockholm.

Loughborough University swimmer Roebuck was almost a second ahead of the rest of the Men’s 400m Individual Medley field to touch home in 4:03.29. Chad Le Clos of South Africa took the silver in 4:04.19 and Kyle Whitaker of the USA collected bronze in 4:08.15.
 
British Gas ITC Loughborough swimmer Simmonds set a new European Record in the final of the Women’s 200m Backstroke to take gold in a FINA World Cup Record 2:02.01. Australian Belinda Hocking took the silver in 2:03.07 and Shiho Sakai of Japan was third in 2:04.77.
 
Michael Rock (British Gas ITC Stockport) lowered the British Record twice on his way to winning bronze in the Men’s 200m Butterfly.
 
He qualified fastest for the final in 1:51.57 before finishing third in 1:51.32 in the fastest final of all time. Gold went to Brazil’s Kaio Alemeida in a new World Record 1:49.11 and Nikolay Skvortsov of Russia took the silver in 1:50.75.
 
British Gas ITC Loughborough swimmer Fran Halsall became Britain’s first woman to dip below the 24-second barrier in the 50m Freestyle as she set two new British Records on the way to a fifth place finish in 23.96. Gold went to Sweden’s Therese Alshammar in 23.75.
 
Young Antony James (Plymouth Leander) has a good outing in the Men’s 50m Butterfly where he was just outside his British Record to finish eighth in 22.90. Gold went to Roland Schoeman of South Africa in 22.08.
