Lizzie Simmonds struck gold once again on the Mare Nostrum tour with a solid performance in the Women’s 200m Backstroke in Monaco.
Simmonds (British Gas ITC Loughborough) was untroubled as she touched home in 2:09.10 way ahead of silver placed Sinead Russell of Canada in 2:13.09.
Loughborough team mate Fran Halsall showed her fighting spirit in the Women’s 100m Butterfly in a head-to-head with Katerine Savard of Canada.
The Freestyle sprint specialist pushed Savard all the way but eventually the gold eluded her with the Canadian winning in 58.89 and Halsall taking the silver in 59.99.
Liam Tancock (British Gas ITC Loughborough) brought Britain’s medal count for day one in Monaco to a close with silver in the Men’s 100m Backstroke. Gold went to Ben Treffers of Australia in 54.65 with Tancock finishing in 55.03.
