Tom Daley and Emma Saunders shortlisted for BBC prize
26 November 2010
Tom Daley and Emma Saunders have been named in the shortlist for the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award.
World diving champion Daley has been nominated for the award three times before and was crowned winner in 2007 and 2009.
Daley became double Commonwealth champion in October after returning from a torn tricep to beat Olympic champion Matthew Mitcham in the 10m Platform final and winning the 10m Synchro with partner Max Brick.
The 16-year-old will be looking to secure his hat-trick this year but will face tough competition from the swimmer Emma Saunders.
Saunders, 16, who trains in Manchester, began her year at the British Gas Swimming Championships where she qualified for the European Junior Championships. She returned from Helsinki as 50m Backstroke champion and silver medallist in all three relay events.
On the back of her results in Finland, she travelled to Delhi as part of the English team for the Commonwealth Games. She showed no sign of nerves at her debut senior international meet, forming part of the silver medal winning team in the 4x100m Freestyle and bronze winning 4x200m Freestyle quartet.
The top three nominees will be invited to attend the Sports Personality of the Year show on 19 December at the LG Arena in Birmingham.
