Top athletes support Guinness World Record relay attempt
17 January 2014
On 1 February 100 swimmers will be aiming to break the 100x100m Swimming Relay Guinness World Record at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.
"It's going to be an amazing day and hopefully one where we'll set a new Guinness World Record!" Lewis Coleman Coleman said: “In June 2012 my Mum was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. Without Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research’s fantastic work my mum may not have been with us today so I wanted to organise an event in aid of the charity to help support their work.
“I’ve had a fantastic response to the 100x100m World record attempt challenge. My 10-year old brother Oliver will lead the team with me as anchor. We’ll be supported by some of Great Britain’s finest swimmers including 30 Olympians, a host of Olympic, Commonwealth, European and World medallists, World record holders and over 50 Great Britain Internationals. It’s going to be an amazing day which will hopefully also result in a new Guinness World Record!”
The team will be hoping to beat the current record of 1hour 37mins 53secs which was set on 29 October 2011 in Queensland, Australia.
Tickets are available to watch the World record attempt and to take part in a Swim Clinic led by Olympic Coach Russ Barber and supported by some of the swimmers taking part in the relay.
City of Sheffield swimmer, Coleman, added: “By supporting 'Swim4Leukaemia' you will be helping to make a real difference to real lives. With all of your support and donations you will be giving many people, from all walks of life, another opportunity to live life to its fullest. I think that is the biggest gift that anyone can give.”
The Swim Clinics will be held at 1pm and 2pm. Doors open for spectators at 2pm. There will be a chance for people to have pictures and autographs with their favourite stars before the record attempt starts at 3:15pm.
