British women looking ahead to fruitful summer
20 April 2011
Great Britain’s women’s water polo team, powered by British Gas, are looking towards a fruitful summer after bringing their Hungarian National League campaign to a close.
Facing a two-leg playoff for fifth place with BVSC-Zuglo, the Brits succumbed to two narrow defeats – losing 8-4 in the first leg before going down 9-8 in their second match.
And while the result left the team finishing sixth overall, there were positives to be taken from their performances, not least Angie Winstanley-Smith’s hat-trick in the final game to take her season tally to 42.
The team can also boast of victories over the regular season league winners and runners-up Dunaujvaros and ZF-Eger during their campaign.
Having returned to their training base at Manchester Aquatics Centre, the British team are preparing for their third European Championship qualifier against group seeds Spain on 30 April.
2004 Olympic champions Italy are training with the British until Thursday 21 April with daily training matches each evening which the public are welcome to watch.
Tickets are available now for the clash with Spain – both sides come into the match having won both their previous qualifying matches so it’s all to play for.
