Brits complete preparation ahead of European Junior Champs

The British Gas GBR under 17 Girls Water Polo team have completed their final preparations ahead of the European Junior Championships by winning the Tri Nations Tournament in Glasgow at the weekend.

The British juniors were able to play against the Welsh and Scottish Senior womens teams in the annual event following the withdrawal of the Irish Womens Team.

They beat the Welsh side in their opening game, 29-5 with Beth Bolton lead the scoring with 6 goals. GB Captain for the tournament, Katy Andrew added five more.

The second match against Scotland proved to be a stern test and was close throughout.

GBR took the lead through a Hannah Patchett goal and continued to fight to maintain. They led at the end of the first half 3-2 following goals from Bolton and Grace Morley.

The final quarter proved equally as close with Andrew and Isobel Howe scoring to give the Brits a 5-4 lead going into the final minute.

After successfully defending a late man-up, they eventually won the match and the overall tournament with Morley being voted the Most Valuable Player.

Included in the squad were Rosie Huck, Honor Grimes and Lauren Tasker who had just returned from the World Under 20 Championships in Greece.

Head Coach Ian MacCallum is pleased with the preparations, he said: “We came to Glasgow to win the Tri Nations and we achieved that.

“I am especially pleased with the performances as we were missing some key players, credit to the girls who came in - they did an excellent job.

"We are looking forward to Istanbul and the challenges that lie ahead".
