Brits defeated by Greeks in quarter final

23 August 2013

The British Gas GBR Under 20 Water Polo team were defeated by a strong homeside at the World Under 20 Water Polo Championships in Volos, Greece.

The Greeks came out strongly, leading from the first period to ultimately win the game 16-5 (5-0, 4-0, 3-2, 4-3).

The homeside scored five unanswered goals in the first quarter and another four to lead 9-0 at the half time buzzer.

But a gutsy British fightback in the third, though Claire Nixon and Katie Hesketh, to match the Greek's three goal to give a quarter score of 3-2.

Danielle Elliot and Hesketh were the first to score in the fourth quarter before the Greeks fired in two of their own.

A Rosie Huck effort took the British total to five, but the Greek side had the momentum - and the support of the partisan crowd- and scored another two to take the match 16-5.

The Brits will now face Hungary, the 2011 silver medallists, in the match which will determine whether they will play off for 5th-6th place or 7th-8th.

Quarter scores:

16-5 (5-0, 4-0, 3-2, 4-3)
