Brits fall to Russia in final group game

The British Gas GBR Under 20 Water Polo team fall to Russia in their last group game in Volos, Greece at the World U20 Water Polo Championships.

Ella Chadderton, Katie Hesketh and Claire Nixon all scored a goal each in the match which ultimately finished 13-3.

GB entered this match knowing that if they bettered Brazil’s 16-4 scoreline against Russia, then they would secure third place in the group.

The opening exchanges were a tight affair. Russia took the lead but Katie Hesketh followed with a top corner shot to equalise.

However Russia edged ahead by the end of the first period, 2-1

The second period proved to be GB’s weakest, and the Russian's scored six goals withouth response to take it to a half time score of 6-1.

The resilient as ever GB team, under the coaching of Nick Hume and Sue Webb, regrouped and in a good period managed 2 goals, one each from Ella Chadderton and Claire Nixon to Russia’s four. At the  end of the 3rd period it was 10 - 3 to Russia.

The second period started well for GB with well structured 6 on 6 defence. However a couple of quick goals half way through heaped pressure on the GB as Russia pushed out to a 12 3 lead. However Goalkeeper Jade Smith marshalled her defence and made some fine saves to ensure Russia scored only one more and GB played with their

The Brits will face Uzbekistan tomorrow afternoon in the cross over match as they target a quarter final spot.
