The British Women’s Junior Water Polo Team, powered by British Gas, were unable to overcome the tough Russian battle in yesterday’s quarter-final match as they went down 18-3.

The team, competing in Ukraine at the LEN Junior Women’s Water Polo Championships, have enjoyed a very successful week which has seen them overcome the likes of Serbia, Ukraine and Germany to earn their first ever final-eight position.

Russia started the match strongly taking a 5-0 lead by the end of the first quarter leaving the British attack with little opportunity to retaliate.

Scoring three goals to Russia’s five over the next two quarters pulled the Brits back, but it was not enough for them to make a mark on the more experienced team. The final quarter saw the Russian attack in fine form as the found the back of the net eight times with no reply from Great Britain.

The Brits will now face Netherlands in the fifth to eighth classification match where they will be hoping to end on a high note.

The British Women’s Junior Water Polo Team consists of:

Jade Smith
Casey Smith
Emma Little
Sophie Gilbert
Ella Chadderton
Katie Hesketh
Kathryn Rutledge
Claire Nixon
Tuesday Birmingham
Courtney Dean
Sarah Young
Laura Shears
Kate Thompson
