Brits look to classification round after Greek defeat

5 September 2013

The British Under 17s women’s water polo team missed out on a quarter final place after losing out to Greece at the 2013 European Junior Championships in Istanbul.

Katy Andrew bagged a hat-trick for the Brits as they doubled their overall goal tally for the tournament in a 21-6 defeat.

GB went into the game looking to cause a major upset but it was the Greeks who took their chances to take an early lead with their left-handed centre forward Asamaki proving a real handful.

"We have two winnable games left and we are determined to come out on top in both and to claim ninth place," - Head coach Ian MacCallumGB created several chances including a penalty and three man ups but the first period ended a disappointing 7-0 to Greece.

The British girls came out in the second period determined to put things right and a Grace Morley goal on the counter attack opened their account. Some determined defending meant the period was drawn 1-1 leaving the half time score 8-1.

The third period brought a second goal for Morley and an excellent finish from Andrew added a third GB goal to the tally. At the other end the Greeks were hitting top gear and scoring some big outside shots.

The score at the end of the third period was 15-3.

GB made a poor start to the last period but showed tremendous spirit and work rate to score a further three times through Kathy Rogers and two strikes from in-form Andrew to leave the final score at 21-6.

This loss means GB move into the classification round with matches against Slovakia and Turkey still to come.

Head Coach Ian MacCallum said: "We have two winnable games left and we are determined to come out on top in both and to claim ninth place.

"It was another difficult game tonight however the girls kept going and were rewarded with six goals against a top Greek side so the spirit in this group is strong ".

GB play Slovakia on Saturday and Turkey on Sunday.
