Brits reach World quarter-finals in style

The British Junior Women’s team eased past Uzbekistan to set-up a quarter final showdown with hosts Greece at the 2013 World Junior Water Polo Championships in Volos.

Having finished third in their preliminary group, the Brits dominated an Uzbekistan side which finished second in their respective group, ultimately running out 18-2 victors.

Ella Chadderton opened the scoring for the Brits after converting a penalty at the end of the first minute of play. She quickly followed with her second before Claire Nixon and Lauren Tasker added their efforts to give the Brits a 4-0 lead at the buzzer.

The Brits were first to score again in the second with Claire Nixon and Katie Hesketh both on target to take the tally to six.

Uzbekistan scored a penalty to open their campaign but the Brits quickly fought back with Rosie Huck and then Hesketh on goal again, giving them a seven goal cushion (8-1) at half time.

The Brits consolidated their lead in the third with goals from Hesketh to score her hat trick at the with Tasker adding her second before Uzbekistan scored their second.

But Hesketh quickly neutralised their attempt to score again before the buzzer to take the score to 11-2.

In the final quarter, the Brits were on a role and scored a further seven goals without response to take the win 18-2 to qualify for the quarter finals at the Under 20 World Championships for the first time in history.

With a guaranteed a top-eight finish in Volos, the Brits will face Group 1 winners Greece on Friday.
