Brits to face Australia in 7th-8th place play-off

The British Gas GBR Under 20 Water polo team will face Australia in their final game of the World Under 20 Water Polo Championships in Volos, Greece after reigning silver medallists Hungary proved too strong.

Hungary ultimately took the win 13-5 and the Brits will play tomorrow to secure their highest finish ever in a World Championships.

Hungary ultimately took the win 13-5 (and the Brits will play tomorrow to secure their highest finish ever in a World Championships.

In a rematch of the opening game, Hungary were first onto the score sheet with a penalty, and a goal to go 2-0 clear. But Claire Nixon quickly put the Brits back in the game, following a third Hungarian goal with her second. Katie Hesketh scored her first of the match and it was 3-3 at the end of the first.

But the reigning silver medallists showed their experience to score five unanswered goals in the second and it was 8-3 at the half time whistle.
 

The Brits played a strong third quarter with Nixon scoring her third and Hesketh her second draw 2, taking the score to 10-5 with just one period remaining.

A determined Hungarian side though scored a further three goals to take the match 13-5.
