Brits win opening game of European Championships qualifiers

The British Gas GBR Women’s Water Polo team have beaten Ukraine 17 – 3 in the opening match of the LEN European Championship qualifying tournament.
Great Britain dominated from the outset, taking an early lead with goals from Ciara Gibson-Byrne (penalty shot) and Hazel Musgrove. During the second quarter Britain began to dominate, with a number of different goal scorers including Peggy Etiebet claiming her debut international goal. Britain held a commanding half time lead of 10-3.
"I was pleased with our performance but we can improve further" - Kostas Vamvakaris Ukraine couldn’t get past the British defence in the second half of the game, which included a penalty save from Jade Smith. Fiona McCann’s two goals in the last three minutes of the match resulted in a 17-3 (4-2, 6-1, 4-0, 3-0) victory.
Head Coach Kostas Vamvakaris said: “I was pleased with our opening performance in this competition, particularly not allowing Ukraine to score in the second half. We are looking forward to the rest of the competition as we believe we can improve further.”
Great Britain’s next two matches are both on Saturday, with the first one against Israel at 08:00 GMT, followed in the afternoon by the Netherlands at 17:00 GMT. For all the action follow @britishswimming on Twitter.
