City of Manchester charge through Water Polo Prelims

British Water Polo League (BWPL) champions City of Manchester continued their winning form to cruise through to the British Gas Water Polo Championships Finals.

Click here for full results from the British Gas Water Polo Championships 2014 Prelims.The North West outfit, boosted by the return of British captain Ed Scott in goal, made qualification to the Finals look easy as they claimed three victories in Group A of the Prelims, defeating Polytechnic (12-8), Bristol Central (12-6) and Portobello (12-10).

Scottish side Portobello, who won the British Gas Water Polo title in 2012, won their other two matches to join Manchester in reaching the Finals at the expense of defending champions Bristol Central who finished third in the group.

Cheltenham won all three of their matches to secure top spot in Group B and set up a semi-final clash with Portobello at the Finals.

Having finished second in this season’s BWPL, Cheltenham saw off Invicta (9-8), Sheffield (17-7) and Lancaster (16-11) to progress.

Invicta became the biggest underdogs to reach the final as the London outfit, who finished second in the BWPL Championship, bounced back from their narrow defeat by Cheltenham to secure second place with victories over Lancaster (17-9) and Sheffield (8-5).
