City of Manchester lead British Championship men’s qualifiers
9th February 2012
City of Manchester led the way to February’s British Gas Water Polo Championships with a perfect record in last weekend’s preliminaries.
Having finished runners-up 12 months ago, Manchester recorded wins over London Polytechnic (16-6), defending champions Bristol Central (8-6) and West London Penguin (11-8) to progress.
While last year’s champions Bristol didn’t top their preliminary group, they did qualify for the finals with Manchester, edging out West London Penguin 13-12 before beating London Polytechnic 16-5 in their final game.
There was a shock in the other preliminary group as National League champions and last year’s British Championship bronze medallists Lancaster City failed to qualify for the finals.
Instead, Scottish outfit Portobello topped the group, beating Cheltenham (12-11) and Lancaster (15-6) before drawing 10-10 with Invicta in their final match.
Cheltenham are the fourth qualifiers, progressing after victories against Invicta (13-8) and Lancaster (14-11) to book a semi-final place
The British Gas Water Polo Championships Finals take place at Manchester Aquatics Centre on 18th – 19th February.
