GB come agonisingly close in Euro Juniors

7 September 2013

GB came within one goal of clinching ninth place at the European Junior Championships in Istanbul this morning.

The Brits made a bright start with Grace Morley winning the swim off, driving straight through to score from an excellent pass from Lauren Tasker.  A penalty converted by Tasker, a second for Morley and a goal from captain Rosie Huck gave GB a narrow 4-3 advantage at the end of the first period.

"I felt we did enough to win the game but we could just not get it over the line in the final quarter," - Head coach Ian MacCallumGB continued to make progress in the second period with Tasker scoring her second goal of the game and Isobel Howe scoring from an outside lob as the half ended 6-4 to the Brits.

The third period was again dominated by GB with a Tasker double and a second for Huck giving GB a seemingly comfortable 9-6 advantage as the third period ended.

The final period was a story of missed opportunities for GB, while at the other end Slovakia found their range, to ultimately win the game 10-9.

It was a game that GB had dominated for large parts and the loss was a big blow to the players who gave everything.

"I felt we did enough to win the game but we could just not get it over the line in the final quarter," said British head coach Ian MacCallum.

"The girls have taken it hard, but we will have them up for our last game against Turkey tomorrow and we will look to finish with a good win."

GB play host nation Turkey tomorrow to determine who will finish in 10th and 11th place.
