GB draw with Brazil on day two of World Champs

20 August 2013

The British Gas GBR Under 20 Water Polo team put in a gutsy performance to come back from a 5-2 half time deficit to draw 6-6 with Brazil on day two of the FINA World Championships in Volos, Greece.

With their sights firmly set on Rio 2016 the Brazilians came out fighting in the first quarter to take a 3-0 lead.

But the Brits came back at them in the second with two goals from Ella Chadderton,  to draw the second quarter 2-2.

The score was 5-2 at the half time buzzer but the Brits showed fantastic spirit in the third quarter with Danielle Elliot (2) and Ella Chadderton both on the score sheet to take the quarter 3-1, putting themselves firmly back in the game.

The last period was a close and tense affair. Ella Chadderton brought GB level with her 4th goal. Chances appeared at either end, including Jade Smith making a great reactionary save, from point blank range.

GB also survived a man down situation right at the end but resilient team work in defence denied the Brazilans the win.

The game ultimately ended 6-6.

National Performance Director, Graeme Thompson, commented “Whilst the start  we gave to Brazil was disappointing, the players demonstrated excellent determination and commitment to play their way back into the match.  It still provides an opportunity to finish 3rd in the group”.

GB take on Russia, who placed fourth in 2011 tomorrow, at 10.30am GMT.
