GB win big against Turkey to claim 10th at European Juniors

9 September 2013

The British Gas GBR Under 17s Women’s Water Polo team concluded their European Junior Championships campaign with a 20-4 win over host nation Turkey to claim 10th place.

The Brits shrugged off the disappointment of the one-goal loss against Slovakia just 24 hours earlier with a comprehensive performance in their final match of the Championships.

"We have come a long way in 12 months and I fully expect some of these girls to be challenging for a place in the senior team in the near future," - Head coach Ian MacCallumThe Turks were first to score but that was to be their only lead as GB replied with goals from Katy Andrew, Honor Grimes and a double from Hannah Patchett to end the first period 4-1 in front.

There was no let up for Turkey in the second period as the GB took total control. Rosie Huck scored two, as did Rhiannon Foulds, with further strikes from Lauren Tasker, Grimes and Andrew giving GB a 11-2 cushion at half time.

The Brits remained focused as the match continued and Grace Morley scored her first and second goals of the game to add to a double from Tasker and one from Beth Bolton, who was rewarded for hard work in the centre forward position. The third period finished with GB leading 16-2.

The final period of the campaign saw Huck, Grimes, Patchett and Isobel Howe add their names to the scoresheet, making the final score 20-4 in favour of GB confirming a 10th place finish.

Head Coach Ian MacCallum said: "It was a good way to finish, I would like to thank all the players, staff and parents for their support this season.

"We have come a long way in 12 months and with the UK Sport funding in place there is a bright future for women's water polo in GB.

"I fully expect some of these girls to be challenging for a place in the senior team in the near future."
