The British Women’s Junior Water Polo Team, powered by British Gas, are making headway in the LEN European Junior Water Polo Championships taking place this week in Ukraine.

The team posted two wins out of three in the preliminary stage to see them qualify for the next round second in their group behind Hungary.

With a 13-5 loss on the first day to the Hungarians the team bounced back with a convincing 17-4 victory over Serbia. With ambitions for a top eight ranking the Brits came out strongly scoring five goals in each of the first three quarters and goal keeper Jade Smith playing strongly to deny the Serbian team.

Their third and final match of the group stage saw the team face host nation Ukraine. The Brits played well to come away with a 17-6 win, with Casey Smith scoring five goals, setting them up with a clash against Germany to earn a place in the quarter-finals.

A new day and another match, buoyed by the senior team’s recent victories over their German rivals, the juniors were eager to show that they too could beat them.

A slow start saw the team go 2-1 up after the first quarter, but it was the second eight minutes that saw the Brits take charge scoring five goals to Germany’s two. The team maintained momentum throughout the game to take a 15-5 win securing their place in the quarter-finals, the first time in the history of the competition they have reached secured a top eight spot.

They will face a strong Russia later today as they look to continue their European journey.
