Lisa Gibson bags four as Great Britain continue hot-streak

12 November 2010

Lisa Gibson bagged four goals as Great Britain’s Women’s Water Polo team, powered by British Gas, comfortably saw off Herakles I in the Hungarian National League.

Frankie Snell also notched a hat-trick as Great Britain recorded their fourth win on the bounce in Budapest, recovering from an early deficit to win 17-7.

Alex Rutlidge impressed on her 22nd birthday while 17-year old Claire Nixon scored twice on her senior Great Britain debut.

Centre back Vickie Hawkins said: "We worked well as a team with some nice man-up goals and excellent teamwork in attack and defence."

World Class Programmes Manager Joanna Wray reports from Hungary:

Great Britain started well by winning the swim off and going straight into attack, getting a man-up before hitting the post. Herakles countered and scored but our next man-up worked with a quick one-two leading to Angie Winstanley-Smith scoring.

Their second goal zipped under GB goalkeeper Robyn Nicholls' body and snuck in but Great Britain responded by turning up the heat - Lisa scored a man-up, Chloe Wilcox put in a sneaky lob, Ciara Gibson also scored from a counter and a great ball into Lisa led to a penalty which Fran Clayton converted.

We defended well throughout and after Herakles hit the crossbar from a man-up, Chloe picked up the rebound, sprinted the pool and won a penalty which Ciara converted to leave us 6-2 after the first.

An organised attack from Herakles led to a shot which hit the post but while the opposition piled on the pressure Alex Rutlidge - celebrating her 22nd birthday - and Robyn impressed at the back to keep them ay bay.

Angie eventually added to the GB tally and after the opposition scored one man-up and a counter, a well worked man-up from GB ended up with a shot from Chloe with Lisa scoring the rebound with a couple of seconds left on the clock.

We started the third quarter with some excellent defence and brilliant goalkeeping from Robyn to keep the score 8-4. Our next man-up gifted a goal to Frankie before a fantastic long-range shot from Ciara smashed on to the post.

First team debutante Claire Nixon scored in an incredble lob to open her senior GB account and take us into double figures. The opposition continued to push but Alex blocked a shot to find Vicky Bowen who then got into the centre and scored.

Herakles scored another man-up before Lisa finished the quarter with her third strike.

Our next goal was probably our best - Robyn passed to Fran whose pin-point cross was slotted in by Claire. Herakles didn't give up and a great shout from distance gave them their sixth goal.

We reacted straight away and Lisa rebounded on an Angie shot to restore our eight goal lead before Frankie scored a man-up. Herakles hit back after two man-downs in a row but our defence continued to impress.

We finished well with another man-up from Frankie and a counter by Vicky to finish the match 17-7.
