New head coach for men’s water polo

The British Gas GBR Men’s Water Polo team have appointed a new interim head coach, Andrei Iosep, to lead the team for the second round of the LEN European Championships Qualification tournament.

"We have to build a new team but it is a beautiful challenge" - Andrei IosepIosep has a wealth of experience as the most capped Romanian player and he has played in Italy, Croatia, Hungary, Spain and the USA, achieving the best result wining the Croatian championship and participating in the Final Four of the Euroleague with Mladost Zagreb.

He was also in the Romanian national team that finished:

  • 4th in the European championships in 2006
  • 6th in the FINA World Championships in 2005
  • 10th at the London Olympics 2012

Commenting on his appointment Iosep said: “I am very excited with the opportunity and I will try to do my best.

“It will be very difficult; we have lost seven field players from the Olympics for the next tournaments so we have to build a new team. It is a beautiful challenge though.” 

The British Gas GBR Men’s Water Polo team will be playing their Group E Qualification matches between 11th -14th July in Slovakia against:

  • France 
  • Switzerland
  • Slovakia 
  • Moldova
  • Denmark

Prior to the qualification tournament, the team will prepare at two training weekends in the UK, followed by a warm up tournament in Oradea, Romania.

The British Gas GBR Men’s Water Polo team finished a credible third place in the first round of the qualifying tournament in Tbilisi, Georgia where they won three, drew one and lost one game.

The third qualification round is scheduled for the 9th – 10th November this year, with the top six nations after the third round entering the final knockout round for qualification.

This is will be the first major qualification for the squad since they came under the leadership of the Management Group after they lost UK Sport Funding in December.

Alan Booth, Chairman of the Management Group said: “It is great to work with such an experienced coach. We look forward to seeing the benefits of his expertise with the men’s squad in July.”
