Tough start for Brits in Istanbul
1 September 2013
GB met tough opposition against Hungary in opening match of 2013 European Junior Water Polo Championships in Istanbul.
It was always going to be a tough match against one of the favourites to be champions in Turkey and while the British girls were up for the challenge, they could not live with the strong start made by the Hungarians, losing 20-3 after an 8-0 opening period.

The period score of 4-2 showed that GB had settled in to the match.
The third period was closely fought with GB working hard in defence to limit the Hungarians to two goals, and despite making numerous chances, GB failed to add to their total as the third period ended with Hungary ahead 14-2.
In the final period GB tired and the Hungarians added on some goals but Emily Sutcliffe opened her account for the competition, scoring an outside shot as GB fought to the end.
Head Coach, Ian MacCallum was realistic after the match: "We still have a gap to close with the top teams. We were very competitive at times against the Hungarians but we need to be competitive for all four periods and we are looking forward to the game against Holland."
The British girls face Holland in the second group game on Tuesday at 10:30 GMT and the game will be webcast live via the LEN website.
