World champs deny Brits in World League clash

21 January 2014

World champions Spain extended their perfect 2014 World League qualification campaign with a 13-5 defeat of the British Gas GBR Women’s Water Polo team in Barcelona.

The Brits came into the game high in confidence, having sealed qualification to the 2014 European Championships just two days ago.

But Spain - who claimed silver at London 2012 - raced out of the blocks, establishing a 6-1 first quarter lead from which the Brits could not recover.

Chloe Wilcox bagged a hat-trick for GB alongside single goals from Angie Winstanley-Smith and Ciara Gibson-Byrne while captain Rosie Morris also saved a penalty for the visitors.

"Our poor start out us in a difficult situation," said British head coast Kostas Vamvakaris.

"However, we then went pretty much level with Spain for over two quarters. This is the level of play we need to work towards for four quarters in the future."

The Brits will head to Russia for their third World League qualifier on 18 March before hosting Spain in Manchester on 22 April.
