James Goddard

James Goddard was one of the most consistent British male swimmers between 2000 and 2012, reaching finals at Olympic, World, Commonwealth and European level.

Goddard broke through with two golds and a silver across the 2000 and 2001 European Junior Championships before going on to compete at three Olympic Games and five FINA World Championships.

Goddard’s greatest success came at the Commonwealth Games. Competing for Team England, he won 200m Backstroke gold and 200m Individual Medley silver on his debut at the 2002 Games in Manchester.

After missing the 2006 Games in Melbourne, Goddard regained his 200m Backstroke title with a spectacular Commonwealth record at the 2010 Games in Delhi before adding 200m Individual Medley gold two days later.

His performance at World and Olympic level were unerringly consistent, reaching the 200m Backstroke final at the 2004 Olympics (fourth) and 2007 Worlds (sixth) and the 200m Individual Medley final at the 2008 Olympics (sixth), 2009 Worlds (sixth) and 2011 Worlds (fourth) and finally the London 2012 Olympics (seventh).

Goddard was also a regular domestic medal winner, competing at 12 British Championships and winning at least one medal at each staging.
