Lizzie Simmonds

After dominating the junior scene between 2006 and 2007, Lizzie Simmonds was championed as a future world-beater and made her Olympic debut as a 17-year old at Beijing 2008, reaching the 200m Backstroke final and finishing sixth.

She enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2010, winning her first international title with 200m Backstroke gold at the European Championships as well as silvers at the Europeans (100m Backstroke) and Commonwealth Games (200m Backstroke) respectively.

She continued to underline her class in 2011, reaching the final and finishing seventh in both the 100m and 200m Backstroke at her third World Championships in Shanghai.

Simmonds lifted the British 200m Backstroke title for the fifth time in her career at the British Gas Swimming Championships 2012 in London, sealing her place at her second Olympic Games in the process.

She was the second-best British female performer in the pool at London 2012, finishing fourth in the 200m Backstroke – missing out on bronze by 0.71 seconds.
