Kate Haywood broke through to senior swimming as a 15-year old at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, helping the England 4x100m Medley Relay team scoop a bronze medal.
A year later, Haywood was named BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year after a second golden performance at the European Junior Championships but a bout of tonsilits in 2004 saw her miss out on an Olympic debut in Athens.
But four years later, Haywood finally made her Olympic bow in Beijing, finishing 11th in the 100m Breaststroke and just missing out on a medal in the 4x100m Medley Relay, ultimately finishing fourth.
Haywood missed the 2009 season with a hip injury but bounced back with a bang in 2010, scoring individual medals at both the European Championships and at her third Commonwealth Games.
