Go Swimming has everything you need to know about swimming. If you are a parent, a non swimmer or just want to improve your technique this is the section for you.

In British Swimming you will find information about the world of high performance sport, including the disciplines of Swimming, Diving, Synchronised Swimming, Water Polo and Para-Swimming.

The ASA is the governing body for the sport in England. In this section you will find all you need to know about joining a club or competing in England and becoming a swimming teacher or coach.

The IoS delivers the ASA’s courses and is a member organisation. Whether you are a teacher, coach, employer or club you will find everything you need to know about qualifications or educating your workforce.

Synchro Referee

Find out the training required to become a Synchro Referee and how to keep your referee status valid.

New Referees

New referees should be recommended by their region to undertake Referee training.

What is involved in referee training:

  • Attend a one-day (5 hour) training course, and pass an examination.

Eligibility

Candidates must be:

  • An existing (N) National or (G) General Judge
  • Current BS/ ASA/ SASA Members
  • 18 years of age or over.

Examination

A one hour (open book) theory paper on application of Laws i.e. situations. To pass, all situations must be dealt with within the Laws of the Sport (FINA/ ASA).

The examination may be held on the same day as the training course, or at a later date, but must be taken within one year of the training course.
 
Confirmation/ Ratification by ASA Technical Committee
Following successful completion of the training day and examination, a mentor will be appointed to successful candidates, to provide support at their first event.

After ratification of the results by the ASA Technical Synchronised Swimming Committee, the qualification will be added to the British Swimming database of Registered Officials.

Qualification – Expiry date and Updating
The qualification as a Referee will be valid for four years, subject to attending any refresher/ updating sessions required due to the introduction of new FINA rules over this period.

Licensing
In Synchro the following technical officials are encouraged to become licensed: Referee, National Judge, National Scorer and Presenter. Only licensed technical officials are able to officiate at National-level events/ championships.

Current Referees

A Referee must re-qualify every four years by attending one of the following:

  • A National/ General Judge training course which includes all the new FINA updates or
  • A Referee training course.
