Blog from the East - GB versus Belarus

The men’s water polo team are in action in Tbilisi where they are taking on the Ukraine, Belarus and Georgia. GB won the first match. Did they beat Belarus? Find out with British Water Polo’s World Class Programmes Manager Joanna Wray’s blog below.

Day two Belarus versus GB

First attack of the game and Belarus converted it, followed swiftly by an outside shot by Rob Parker to level it 1-1.

Belarus were playing a fast counter-attacking game but Matt Holland started well saving a one-on-one.  He then saved a penalty as well to keep the score level.

The match continued to be fast paced with end to end attacks.  Next goal was nicely set up by Alex causing a man up which Rob again was there to convert. Final score of the quarter 2-1

Straight into a man down but Belarus couldn’t score and so straight into an attack for GB.  Rob passed and moved into centre forward to then receive the ball back and put it in the net.  Man down for Belarus was scored as was their next counter-attack.  The score was back to 3-3.  However, Mike finished the quarter with a goal making it 4-3 going into half time.

Ciaran scored the first attack of the second half. For the next few minutes attacks came for both teams but no one converted them.  This was broken by Rob scoring a man-up. Belarus then they broke free to score making it 6-4 to GB.

Our next attack led to Jack Waller scoring from centre forward, followed by a steal in defence by Adam leading to a counter attack scored by Rob.

In the first minute of this quarter we received a penalty against us that Belarus scored.  But Rob was up to the challenge again and scored a great outside shot.  And he wasn’t finished either. Nice work by the rest of the team left Rob free to move into space and score a cross-gage shot making it 10-5.

By this time Belarus were getting tired and another counter-attack with a two-on-three situation was finished by Rob.  Belarus managed to convert two man ups but we equaled it with Adam tipping the ball in from our man-up and Mike also scoring.

A special mention has to be made to Rob Parker who scored an impressive 8 out of the our 13 goals. Final score 13-6 to GB. A second win. Yes!
