Dublin Cup blog: Tricky test against World League champs

7th July 2012

World class programmes manager Joanna Wray is with the British Gas GBR Men’s Water Polo team as they prepare for their Olympic appearance at the Dublin Cup.

Our third match of the Dublin Cup was against in-form Croatia who won the World League Super Final earlier this season.

Q1: Glen Robinson won a tight swim off to get the game underway. Adam Scholefield was fouled and fired the ball in with a few seconds remaining.

Rob Parker decided he wanted a piece of the action and did exactly the same as Adam, scoring after a foul in CF.

Some great defence from the Brits kept Croatia off the scoreboard and while we had our first man-up, we couldn't convert and Croatia threatened on the counter with a shot just off-target.

With 30 seconds left of the quarter Croatia get a man-up and convert this time for their first goal then whip in another with five seconds left to end the quarter 2-2.

Q2: Croatia were first to score in this quarter to take the lead. We won a man-up but a shot was tipped along the line and agonisingly didn't cross for a goal.

Some great saves by Matt Holland in goal kept GB in with only a goal down. However, as the quarter goes on Croatia score twice more.

A deflected shot from Ciaran James on man-up gets us on the board for the quarter but at half-time it's 7-3 to Croatia.

Q3: Ed Scott took over in goal but Croatia's first attack ended up a goal that just tipped over Ed, very unlucky. The Croatians score a penalty to make it 9-3.

Ed makes a good save on a Croatian man-up but they earn another penalty which they score.

At last, Adam gets a ball from Alex Parsonage and fires it in. Croatia score another man-up but Craig Figes fires just over the bar as the quarter ends 12-4.

Q4: Ciaran rattled the post with a long range shot but Croatia went straight on the counter and scored.

GB started to look a little tired as Croatia kept the goals coming but another British goal puts us 15-5 down with four minutes left.

Another great shot from Jake Vincent ricocheted off the bar which summed up our luck in the game as the match finished 17-5.

Great Britain 5 - 17 Croatia

GB goals: Adam Scholefield (2), Rob Parker, Ciaran James, Craig Figes
